Wines and mouthwatering Portuguese dishes? Yes, please.
The restaurant’s name is Wine Not, which reveals the owner’s (João Ribeiro) special ability to choose names with double meaning, funny and catchy. “Why not” or “Wine not?” We believe so.
The former restaurant focused in meals for large groups, but now it is a place where you can have a light meal with a glass of wine, exclusively of Ermelinda Freitas’s brand.
This space has been around for a long time, but due to the owner’s family place of residence there was a change of direction. You see, João Ribeiro and his wife Rute, head of the kitchen, live in Quinta do Anjo, place of birth of the famous and tasty Azeitão Cheese as well as a wine cellars region, such as Palmela, Poceirão, Fernando Pó, and of course Azeitão. Because of this it was only natural that Fernando Pó’s wine producer, Ermelinda Freitas, became partner of this wine bar and wine shop.
At Wine Not, located in Chiado, you can taste, ask for advice and purchase any of Ermelinda Freitas’s products with a 10% discount, except for Vinha do Rosário, sold exclusively in one commercial area.
Start with a sparkling wine, rosé or white, then continue with a white wine, after that have a red wine and finish with an old spirits or the unavoidable Moscatel de Setúbal, all from the Ermelinda Freitas’s portfolio. Wine by the glass has a very inviting price (from 1,6 €) and you can match each snack with the most appropriate wine, with the help and suggestions of Wine Not’s team.
Standing out from all the dishes is the potato trilogy (beetroot, sweet potato and cassava, 2€), perfect for a late afternoon with friends or the padrón peppers (3,5€), but also pure beef croquets (4€) with no sausage filling. There are also two special dishes of the day, for anyone who prefers this kind of meal.
As homage to the Land that welcomes them daily, João and Rute also include in the menu the typical cheese and cake (Torta) of Azeitão as complement to the region’s wines.
Wine Not is open from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and has a small terrace. It has a cosy decoration, designed by Casa Ermelinda Freitas with several references to the wine universe, such as lamps made of bottles, barrels in the ceiling and allusive photographs.
